Bernice A. Johnson Johnson, 83, a resident of Newton since 1927, died Sunday morning, Oct. 31, at the Heritage Manor Care Center of cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First Lutheran Church.

The Rev. Matthew Martens, pastor of the church, will conduct services. Burial will be in Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Reese Funeral Home after 2 p.m. Tuesday and visitation with the family will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorials to the First Lutheran Church Building Fund may be left at the funeral home, at the church or mailed to Timothy Johnson, 121 W. 5th St. S.

Survivors are two sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Bonnie of Fairmont, Minn., and Timothy and Charlene of Newton; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a brother, Harold Johnson of Rake.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Elvin, in 1983, a daughter, Beverly Wehrman, in 1977, and several brothers and sisters.

Mrs. Johnson, a homemaker, was a member of the First Lutheran Church, Skiff Medical Center Auxiliary, Jasper County Historical Society, SFB Club and FAF-A-LOT Club.

The daughter of Hans H. and Isabelle Thompson Johnson, she was born Nov. 29,1909 in Rake and attended Rake schools, was graduated from Rake Community High School and in 1926 from Luther Academy in Albert Lea, Minn.

She was married to Elvin B. Johnson Nov. 21, 1927 at the Lutheran Church parsonage at Blue Earth, Minn.

She moved to Newton from Rake in 1927. ~ Probably Newton Daily News, Monday, November 1, 1993.
