John E. Cross, 74, dean of Newton attorneys and a civic leader, died at his desk late Tuesday of heart attack.

Surviving are his wife and a daughter, Doris.
He was born near Harrisonville, Ohio, the son of Milton and Mary (Kirkendall) Cross. The family moved to Iowa and later to Nebraska, and in 1894 returned to Iowa to settle on a farm near Baxter.
Mr. Cross attended Holt county schools in Nebraska, finished his early education in Jasper county. He taught school in the rural area of the county for a number of years and in 1901 entered the State University of Iowa law school. He graduated with an LLB degree in 1904, president of his senior class.
