C. E. Gist Dies at 82 in Newton

Was Born in County, Farmed Most of Life; Services Thursday

Funeral services for Charles Ewing Gist, 82, pioneer Jasper county farmer who died yesterday at Skiff Memorial hospital, will be held Thursday afternoon at two o’clock at Toland Funeral Home.

Mr. Gist had been taken to the hospital Saturday morning.

He was born in Jasper county on a farm in the Greencastle vicinity Jan 23, 1868, to Holden C. and Harriet Jane Gist. On Feb. 21, 1894, he was married to Mary J. Moffitt at Des Moines.

Farmed
About 1904 the couple moved to Missouri where they farmed for several years before returning to farm in the Metz vicinity. Mr. gist later retired and for the last six years the Gists have lived in Newton at 427 North Fourth avenue East. They celebrated their fifty-sixth wedding anniversary this year.

Mr. Gist’s survivors include his wife; two sons, Guy of Booneville, Mo. And Hugh of El Paso, Texas, and one daughter, Mr. L. W. Anderson of Kellogg. Seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren also survive.

Mr. Gist was a member of the Palo Alto Grange and The Daily News Three-Quarter Century Club.

Officiating at the services Thursday will be Rev. Clyde McDonald of Des Moines. Burial will be in Newton Union cemetery. ~ The Newton Daily News, October 2, 2950, page 1.
