James B. Emerling was born in Akron, Ohio, Sept. 24, 1847, and died at his home in Mingo on the evening of March 16, 1920. While a young man Mr. Emerling moved from Ohio to Des Moines, Iowa. On January 3, 1887, he was united in marriage to Miss Sarah Gillam of Van Meter, Iowa. About twenty-two years ago the family moved to Mingo where they united with the M.E. church. They have lived in Mingo until his death. Mr. Emerling had recently recovered from a severe case of influenza and had been out on the streets. On the evening of March 16th while sitting eating supper still weak from his recent illness, an acute attack of heart trouble came quickly upon him. To his wife he said: “I am going” and was gone. He leaves to mourn his death besides his widow, one son Fred M. Emerling of Valley Junction, one daughter, Mrs. Wm. Brunson of Mingo and one stepson Chas. E. Petit of Des Moines. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at the church conducted by Rev. Arthur H. Adams. Music was furnished by a mixed quartette composed of Rev. and Mrs. Arthur H. Adams, Mrs. J. L. Hartley and Frank Baker. Burial was made at the Greencastle cemetery.
