Her obituary reads:

"VERLA SHILL
Nevada

Verla Wanda Shill, 85, of Nevada died of pneumonia Thursday at Story County Long Term Care there. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church in Nevada, of which she was a member. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery in Marshalltown.

Mrs. Shill was born in Mingo and had lived in Kellogg, Mingo and the Cambridge area before moving to Nevada in 1974. She was a homemaker and a former schoolteacher. She was a member of the United Methodist Women, her church's quilting guide and Farm Bureau and was a volunteer with Story County Long Term Care. She enjoyed making quilts, knitting, cooking, baking, gardening, and canning.

Surviving are two sons, Everett of Clear Lake and Lyle of Cambridge; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, John.

Friends may call after 10 a.m. Monday at the Bacon Funeral Home in Nevada, where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to her church."

Her memorial folder reads:

"Verla Wanda Shill 85, of Nevada, died Thursday, July 13, 2000 at Story County Long Term Care of pneumonia.

She was born October 25, 1914 in Mingo, Iowa the daughter of Willis and Ina (Harter) Beard. She was united in marriage to J. Wesley Shill June 1, 1943 in Kellogg, Iowa. J. Wesley died in 1984. Together they lived in Kellogg, Mingo, Riceville, and moved to the family farm in Cambridge in 1950, and after retiring in 1974 they moved to Nevada. She taught rural schools in Jasper County from 1932 to 1943. She was a homemaker who enjoyed quilting, knitting, cooking, baking, gardening, and canning. She was a member of the Nevada First United Methodist Church, the UMW, the church quilting guild, Farm Bureau, and had served as a volunteer at Story County Long Term Care after moving to Nevada.

Verla is survived by two sons and daughter-in-laws: Everett and DeLaine Shill of Clear Lake, Iowa and Lyle and Ann Shill of Cambridge, Iowa; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Her parents, husband, two sisters: Neva Helling and Laurel Bates, and two brothers: one in infancy and Delmar Beard preceded her in death."
