"Laurel Nadine Bates, 83, of Phoenix, Ariz., died of cancer there Wednesday. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Mingo United Methodist Church, of which she was a member. Burial will be at Graham Cemetery near there.

Mrs. Bates was born in Mingo and had lived there until moving to Arizona in 1987.* She was the retired owner and operator of the Mingo Meat Locker.

Among survivors are her husband, Elnathan; a son, Howard Maxwell, Jr.** of Altoona; four daughters, Kay Gerhart and Jean Reece, both of Des Moines, Alice Lundberg of Derby and Charlene Scott of Phoenix; a brother, Delmar Beard of Newton; a sister, Verla Shill of Nevada; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Friends may call after 1 p.m. Tuesday at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home in Newton, where the family will be present from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to her church."
