Obituary of James Stock, Sr.

"James Stock, Sr., died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Sarah Streeter, three miles north of Mingo, August 22, 1902; his fatal illness having originated from the effects of a fall on the ice December 22, 1901, since which time he has been practically helpless.

James Stock was born in Lancastershire, near Liverpool, England, August 1, 1815, and at his death was a little past 87 years old. He came to America in 1835 and located in Summit County Ohio. On March 21, 1837, he was married to Miss Sarah McClaughan, of Portage county, and to this union were born thirteen children - two of whom died in infancy. Mrs. Kate Priest, residing in Polk county Iowa; Mrs. Elizabeth Streeter and Mrs. Sarah A. Streeter, of Mingo; Richard Stock; of California; Zachariah Stock, of Idaho; Mrs. Mary Evans, of Perry; Mrs. Anna Day, of Sheridan, Missouri; George Stock, of Nebraska, and James Stock, of Colfax, complete the list of surviving children. Cass Stock died in Newton in 1890, and Carrie, the youngest, died at the old family home in Clear Creek township, in 1891.

Seven of the surviving children were present at Father Stock's funeral last Monday. Father Stock and his family came to Iowa in 1856 and located in Clear Creek township where he remained until his death. Mother Stock died three years ago; since which time Father Stock has made his home with his daughter Mrs. E. M. Streeter.

Father Stock joined the United Brethren in 1858, and has, ever since been a faithful and consistent Christian and church worker. At the time of his death he was a member of the Congregational class at Ashton Chapel, and from this chapel the funeral took place. Their was a short address and bible reading at the house by Hon. G. M. Wilson, and old friend of the family, and a prayer by Father Baker, of Mingo; then the congregation proceeded to the church where Rev. McCorkle, of Baxter, took charge, assisted by Rev'ds Lavender and McKeog. The congregation was one of the largest ever assemblied in Clear Creek.

Mingo, Aug. 25, 1902 E.M.S."
[Note: "Carrie, the youngest," is a misprint. This should be "Garrie", also known as Garibaldi. It is also believed that Cass died in 1891 and Garrie died in 1890. "E. M. S." who wrote this obituary is Edwin Murray Streeter, husband of Sarah Ann Stock.]
