Coon, W. D. – 1859-1931

Funeral services for W. D. Coon were held at 3 o’clock Wednesday afternoon from the Smith Funeral home at Grinnell, Ia., and burial was in the Hazelwood cemetery at that place. Pallbearers were friends who had known Mr. Coon in Grinnell.
W. D. Coon was born April 13, 1859 at Oxford Junction, Ia., and died March 10 at Newton, lacking but one month of being 72 years of age.
Mr. Coon came from Hutchinson, Kans., to Iowa in the year 1890 and settled on a farm near Lohrville, where he lived for four years and then lived for a period of eight years in Lohrville before purchasing a home in Grinnell. The remainder of his life with the exception of the past two years was at that place, where he was employed as a tinner.
He was united in marriage to Lotta Ayars on March 8, 1888.
He had been suffering with dropsy for a number of years and at the time of his wife’s death two years ago, he went to Newton to make his home with a nephew, Floyd Coon.
Besides his wife, five sisters and two brothers have preceded him in death.
Surviving him are four brothers, Albert of Farnhamville, Ia., Elmer of Cutler, Wis., Charles of Farnhamville, Ia., and Marion of Lohrville. He also leaves 39 nieces and nephews and many friends both in Newton and Grinnell.
