Thomas Dixson of This City Dies
Rites Held This Afternoon at Christian Church; Burial in Newton Cemetery
Thomas W. Dixson of this city died at his home here Saturday at the age of 75 years. Funeral services were conducted this afternoon at 2 o’clock in the Christian church and burial was in the Newton Union cemetery. Rev. Paul E. Becker, pastor of the Christian church had charge of the rites.
Thomas W. Dixson was born in Fairfield, April 4, 1853. His parents and grandfather were among the earlier settlers in Jefferson county, coming to Iowa when the Indians were still ranging over that territory. In childhood he often played and trapped with the Indian boys near his home.
Received Early Training
His father was a United Brethern minister and from him the children received a Christian training that remained with them through life. On March 1874, he was united in marriage to Miss Ella Dovenstike, who lived in that vicinity. After their marriage they resided for several years in that community and later lived in various places in this state. They came to Newton about three years ago.
Mr. Dixson has been employed as a caretaker for several public buildings in Newton among them was the city hall, Rex Theater and the Christian church. He was engaged in active labor practically until the time of his death which came Saturday evening after a few hours illness with heart trouble.
Survivors
He is survived by his widow, two daughters, Mrs. Elsie McConkey of Newton and Mrs. Alice Lowther of Newton, two brothers, Marvin Dixson of Mioo, Missouri and Alonzo Dixson of Arkansas and two grandsons, Sam McConkey and Cleve Lowther both of this city.
Mr. Dixson was an honest and industrious laborer and a man of Christian faith and character. He had been a professing Christian since young manhood and in this city he had attended the Christian church.
