Althea Maria (Romano) Maher 12/25/33 - currently in hospice. Married to Donald Maher.
Don was born in Colfax, IA, to Dan and Maria Maher and grew up on a farm in Mingo, IA. Althea was born in Des Moines, IA, to Joseph and Althea Romano.
Donald and Althea Maher were married 02/11/56 in Des Moines, IA at St John's Basilica. The two raised four children Sandra L Maher, Joseph D Maher (Linda), John D Maher (Diane) and James D Maher (Jennifer).
Don was a life-long farmer in Mingo, IA; Milan, Missouri and Bella Vista, AR. He raised livestock and row crops. Don was also a proud member of the United States Air Force.
Althea was a nurse with the VA hospital in Des Moines and Fayetteville, AR, where she had a nursing career in ICU and CCU that spanned over 30 years.
The family would also like to thank the exceptional staff at Younker's 7 and the wonderful staff at the Taylor house for making mom's final days something special, especially after facing the passing of her 58 year partner. You are all special people - carrying out a wonderful mission. Our nurse was most impressed with all of you and especially the students working toward their degree in nursing. Go for the Gold!!
A visitation will be held at St. Joseph's Church from 9:00-10:00 am and A celebration of life mass service will begin at 10:30 am Saturday, November 22, 2014. A reception will immediately follow from 12:00-3:00 pm, at Tursi's "Latin King", 2200 Hubbell Ave., Des Moines, IA 50317. St Joseph's Catholic Church 3300 Easton Blvd., Des Moines, IA 50317
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts be made to St. Louis Children's Hospital Foundation, One Children's Place, St. Louis, MO 63110-1077.
