Donald J. Maher, 85 (passed 11/11/14) was born in Colfax, IA, to Dan and Marie Maher and grew up on a farm in Mingo, IA.
Donald and Althea Maher were married 02/11/56 in Des Moines, IA at St John's Basilica. The two raised four children Sandra L Maher, Joseph D Maher (Linda), John D Maher (Diane) and James D Maher (Jennifer).
Don was a life-long farmer in Mingo, IA; Milan, Missouri and Bella Vista, AR. He raised livestock and row crops. Don was also a proud member of the United States Air Force.
He is survived by his wife Althea, their children Sandy, Joe and Jim. Their 9 grand children Sandy - Cody Thompson; Joe - Mallory Zivney and Shawna Monson; John - Christian and Alicia Maher and Jim - JD, Jack, Joe and Josh Maher. Their step-grandchildren Sandy - Natalie Lyons and Stephanie Harklau. Their Great Grand Children - Mallory - Avery Zivney and Christian - Clark Maher
He was proceeded in death by his parents and son, John Maher.
We want to thank the staff at Lutheran Hospital for the remarkable care they gave dad during his stay there. Their caring and sensitivity was very comforting.
The visitation will be held at St. Joseph's Church from 9:00-10:00 am and the mass service will begin at 10:30 am Saturday, November 22, 2014. A reception will immediately follow from 12:00-3:00 pm, at Tursi's "Latin King", 2200 Hubbell Ave., Des Moines, IA 50317. St Joseph's Catholic Church 3300 Easton Blvd., Des Moines, IA 50317
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts be made to St. Louis Children's Hospital Foundation, One Children's Place, St. Louis, MO 63110-1077.
