Former County Resident Dies
Mrs. Charles E. Smith of Montesano, Wash., Dies Thursday Afternoon
Clear Creek – Mrs. Charles E. Smith, 68, former Jasper county resident, died Thursday at 9:15 a.m. at her home in Montesano, Wash., according to word received by a niece, Clara Tiffany.
Mrs. Smith had been an invalid since Sept. 1931, when she suffered a fractured hip and an injured back in a fall.
Anna Stock, daughter of Joseph and Rachel (DeWitt) Stock, was born in Clear Creek township, Jasper county, Aug. 8, 1867. She attended the Hazel Dell Academy in Newton and Drake university in Des Moines, later teaching in the rural schools of the county.
Her family moved to Baxter in 1887, and she was one of the two first teachers in the Baxter school. Later she opened a millinery shop, and when the family moved to Colfax in 1892, she learned dressmaking under Mrs. Belle Gray Warrick. She then opened a dressmaking shop of her own.
She was united in marriage to Charles E. Smith of Newton in December, 1897, and the couple lived on the Stock farm in Clear Creek township for a while. They later bought a farm near Metz, where they lived until they moved west to Wyoming. After several years in Wyoming and Montana, they located at their present home in Montesano, Wash., in 1918.
Surviving relatives are her husband; three children, Lloyd and Orville of Bremerton, Wash., and Mabel in California, and three grandchildren. One son, a brother, Joseph Stock, and a sister, Mrs. F. L. Tiffany, preceded her in death.
