Funeral Services To Be held Tuesday Afternoon At 2:00 O’clock
Henry S. Morrison, 88, retired hardware merchant and insurance representative, died at the home of his son, Charles Morrison Sunday evening at 8:35 o’clock. The older Mr. Morrison suffered a heart attack last July and had been in failing health since that time.
Mr. Morrison, a resident of Newton since 1891, was the oldest registered member of the Three Quarter Century club of the Newton Daily News and Jasper County Record. Joining the club on March 23, 1927, he was the fifth to register. The other four have preceded him in death.
Pioneer Resident
Born Nov. 27, 1851, at Orange county, N. Y., he was the youngest of nine children, all having preceded him in death. His widowed mother and her family came to Iowa when Mr. Morrison was seven years old and settled in Scott county. On Sept. 3, 1860, they moved to Jasper county.
He was united in marriage to Mattie B. Pickens at Kellogg, Ia., on Sept. 9, 1891 and the couple came immediately to Newton where Mr. Morrison entered the hardware business with Phillip Scharf.
Hardware Merchant
The Scharf-Morrison hardware store was located in the present site of the Marshall Hardware store. Mr. Morrison retired from this business in 1902 and entered into the insurance business.
From that time until his retirement in 1925, Mr. Morrison was an insurance representative and served a total of 15 years with the Farmers Mutual Insurance company as secretary and for several years was vice-president.
Retired in 1926
Following the death of his wife on May 30, 1925, he retired from business and began his series of annual sojourns to Florida in the winter of 1926. Each winter since that time Mr. Morrison spent at a resort in Florida where he enjoyed his favorite sport of fishing. While in Newton he stayed at the Mrs. Henry G. Bergman home.
An elder of the First Presbyterian church, he had spent much of his time in church work and taught the men’s Bible class for several years.
Justice of peace
Mr. Morrison also took part in all community activities, was a member of the Masonic lodge, No. 59 A.F. and A.M. and served about six years as justice of peace taking his first timer in 1908.
Four children who survive are: H. H. Morrison, C. W. Morrison and J. G. Morrison, all of Newton and Leland P. Morrison of Washington, Ia.; also three grandchildren, Martha Ann Morrison of Newton, and Douglas and Mary Kathryn Morrison of Washington, Ia.
Funeral services will be conducted from the First Presbyterian church, Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock by the Rev. R. F. Chambers of Griswold, Ia., assisted by Rev. George DeF. Fisher. Interment will be at the Newton Union cemetery.
