Miss Mary E. The funeral services were held this afternoon at the Congregational church at 2:30 o’clock and were in charge of Dr. C. C. Williams. Music was furnished by Fred Hough accompanied by Robert B. McGregor on the pipe organ. Mr. Hough sang “Face to Face” and “Harbor Bar.”
The pallbearers were Fred Hough, D. J. Eberhart, W. H. Jasper, Frank Woodrow, F. E. Evans and A. E. Hindorff. Burial was made in the Newton cemetery.
Miss Mitchell was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Mitchell, pioneer residents of this city, who came here in 1866. Miss Mitchell was born in this city and lived here until her removal to Minneapolis in 1893, where she has since made her home. She is one of nine children, all of whom are now dead with the exception of three; Willis, an artist, Miss Gertrude, a teacher, both of Minneapolis and with whom she made her home and the Reverend James J. Mitchell of Texas. Laura and Herbert died in infancy, Charles F., a harness maker died in Newton in 1895 from the effects of an accident near the Rock Island station. Arthur met his death in Denver in 1891. He was a natural artist of unusual ability, Carroll F., a druggist has since died.
Mr. Mitchell owned a bookstore in this city on the east side of the square and during his residence here he filled many public offices, chief among which were constable and city Marshall, justice of the peace, member of city council, government internal revenue assessor of county government inspector of fourth Iowa district, and a deputy sheriff of this county.
Mr. Mitchell died here several years ago. Mrs. Mitchell with Willis, Mary and Gertrude moved to Minneapolis. Mrs. Mitchell died about six years ago. The body was brought to this city for burial in the Newton cemetery with other deceased members of the family.
Miss Mitchell is an alumnus of the local high school, having been graduated with the class of ’82. She later attended the conservators of music at Grinnell, after which she gave lessons on the piano and organ in this city. She was a lifelong member of the Congregational church and an excellent woman with a countless number of friends in Newton. Since moving to Minneapolis, she has kept the home for her brother and sister.
Miss Gertrude has recently accepted a government position at Washington, D.C. She has been teaching at Minneapolis and is considered as one of the best educators in Minneapolis.
The family is one of unusual ability and one which is a great credit to Newton.
