Mary M. Hawkins

Mary M. Hawkins, 87, of 429 E. 7th St. N., died of heart failure Saturday May 30, 1998, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

A 7 p.m. prayer service will be held Tuesday at the Wallace-Pence Funeral Home in Newton.

Funeral services will be held at the funeral home Wednesday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Phillip
Cardenzana, pastor of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newton, officiating. Burial will be at Vandalia Cemetery in Vandalia.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 1 p.m. Tuesday. Visitation with the family will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials in Mrs. Hawkins' name will be accepted.

The daughter of Charles C. and Edna Gertrude McSwiggin Dickinson, she was born Feb. 26, 1911, in Blairstown. She attended Blairstown Schools.

She married Burl E. Hawkins, Sr. June 3, 1935, in Newton.

A resident of Jasper County for more than 50 years, she lived in Monroe before moving to Newton. Mrs. Hawkins worked as a homemaker. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newton.

Survivors include two sons, Harold and Michael, both of Newton; three daughters, Darlene Garwick of Des Moines, Harriet "Laina" Hawkins of Newton and Donna Dickerson of Dallas. Ga.; many grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; a sister. Lucille Butterbaugh of Scottsdale. Ariz.; a son-in-law, Don Smith of Newton: and a daughter-in-law. Grace Hawkins of Newton.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, four infant sons, three sons, two daughters, five grandchildren, five brothers, and two sisters.
