Monroe – Relatives in Monroe received word last week from Long Beach, Calif., telling of the death of Mrs. S. E. Hill, formerly of Monroe.
Mrs. Hill had been an invalid for the past two years. She was a sister of the late C. B. Livingstone. Burial was in Long Beach.
The following was written by Mrs. Hill, Jan. 28, 1936. “Charles M. Livingstone, my father, son of Thomas and Sarah (Willett) Livingstone was born in Washington County, New York, September 1816 and when 19 years of age came with parents, three brothers and one sister to Morrow County, Ohio. In the fall of 1858 he and his parents came to Monroe, Iowa to which state the brothers had already come. The sister, Mrs. George Bruce, had before this passed away. The Livingstones came originally from the Britich Isles so may have been related to David Livingstone.
“My mother, Nancy Ruth Livingstone, was born in Virginia March 25, 1917 and came with parents, Elijah and Melinda (Browning) Bruce, six brothers and two sisters to Morrow County, Ohio, when 13 years of age. The Bruces were from Scotland, so in the past may have been related to Robert Bruce. All my mother’s ancestors were from the British Isles.
“My father and mother were married in December, 1840 and 10 years later, with five children came to Iowa and settled on a farm 2 ˝ miles southwest of Monroe. I was born October 12, 1847, and was nine years old when we came to Iowa in 1856.
“In March, 1860, I united with the Baptist church of Monroe and was married Jan. 21, 1869 to George W. Hill.
“We lived on a farm until the fall of 1884 when we moved to Monroe where we lived for 21 years. In the fall of 1905 we sold our home and came to California and after four years of wandering, on Nov. 30, 1909, took possession of a home at 827 Cedar Avenue, Long Beach, which has been our home for 37 years. I became a member of the First Baptist church, Long Beach, and also joined the W.C.T.U.”
