Myrtle Preston Rites Held At Christian Church
Funeral services for Myrtle Alice Preston, 61, well-known Newton resident, who died at her home last Saturday, were held Tuesday afternoon at the First Christian church of which she was a long-time member.
Dr. E. P. Gabriel, pastor of the church, as the officiating minister, read his text from Miss Preston’s New Testament and a favored poem of her collection.
During the services a quartet composed of Mrs. C. Fahrney, Mrs. R. S. Trevathen, G. Frank Wilson and Dr. Gabriel, sang “Some Day We’ll Understand.” Accompanied by Mrs. Gabriel, and Ruth Annette Gabriel sang “Prayer Perfect.”
Pallbearers
Pallbearers were Harry Doane, Carroll Morrow, Ray McMurray, Carl Jones, Marc Hickman and E. Salverson.
Members of the flower committee were Mrs. Eleanor Tyler, Ruth Thoroman, Belle Willey, Mrs. E. D. Hall, Mrs. Kenneth Selters and Mrs. Harry Doane.
Miss Preston, who had been employed as cashier at the Local Rock Island railway freight office for over 30 years prior to her retirement in November, due to failing health, was born Oct. 4, 1882, in Grinnell, Ia., the second of a family of five children of the late Frank A. and Alice Fox Preston. She had been a resident of Newton since 1900 and was active in a number of fraternal organizations in the city. Members of several of the orders attended the services in a body.
Survivors
Surviving relatives include a brother, Harvey J. of Marshalltown; a sister, Mrs. Doris Preston Luscombe of Hollywood, Calif., who had been caring for her sister during her illness; and three nephews, Vernon W. Preston of the U.S. Navy; Clarence E. Luscombe of Hollywood, and Pvt. Charles P. Luscombe of Camp Barkley, Tex., who will leave this weekend after returning to attend the services.
Others who attended the rites from away were Mr. and Mrs. Harvey J. Preston of Marshalltown; Mr. and Mrs. C. S. Myers, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Reynolds, Mr. and Mrs. S. C. Forsythe, Mrs. Lawrence Wilson, Mrs. John Andrews and Mrs. J. Robertson, all of Grinnell; Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Quinn of Kellogg; Mrs. Neil Wilding of Los Angeles, Calif.; Mrs. John R. Cheyne of Mason City, formerly of Newton; Andrew Sneddon, Sarah Sneddon and Mrs. W. S. Ayres of Des Moines; and Mrs. Curtis Ackin, Mrs. R. S. Fletcher, Mrs. Marguerite Thomas and Mrs. Goldie Wheeler of Colfax.
