Helen J. McDermott, 85, of Newton died of heart failure Wednesday, June 25, 1997, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Wake services will be Friday at 6 p.m. at the Wallace-Pence funeral Home in Newton. Funeral services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newton with the Rev. Ernie Braida, parish priest; officiating. Burial will be in Union Chapel Cemetery in Ira.

Visitation will be held Friday after 4 p.m. at the funeral home. Family will be present at the funeral home from 5 to 8 p.m. Memorials to the Union Chapel Cemetery will be accepted.

The daughter of Frank and Lizzie Rider Baker, she was born July 14, 1911, in Jasper County. She was a graduate of Newton High School.

She married Vincent C. McDermott Aug. 6, 1932, in Newton. She was a resident of Mingo prior to moving to Newton. Mrs. McDermott was a homemaker. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Churches in Valeria and Newton.

Survivors include three daughters, Patricia McDermott of Hastings, Minn., Margaret (Mrs. Tom) Durbala of Newton and Barbara (Mrs. Bruce) Gaylor of Hastings, Minn.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and a brother.
