Ruth I. L. Herbert

Ruth Iva Lee Martin Herbert, 100, formerly or 516 E. 3rd St. N., a resident of Newton since 1949, died Thursday, Dec. 30, 1993, at the Skiff Medical Center of pneumonia.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 3, at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home. The Rev. Ernie Braida, pastor of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, will conduct services. Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 9 a.m. Sunday and visitation with the family will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials to a fund in her name may be left at the funeral home.

Survivors are a daughter, Ruth Compton of Newton; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Wilfred, Nov. 5, 1948, two brothers and two sisters.

Mrs. Herbert, a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Pocahontas Lodge and Women of the Moose, was a nurse's aide at Shaw Nursing Home for many years and an elevator operator at the Maytag Hotel for many years.

The daughter of Samuel Edwin and Laura Bell Brooks Martin, she was born July 22, 1893 in Glenwood, Mo.

She was married to Wilfred J. Herbert July 12, 1934 in Gallup, N.M.
