G. Jean (Williams) Scarbrough went home to be with Jesus her Savior and Lord. May 17, 2014.

Born Oct. 2, 1932, daughter of Sam and Elsie (McCumber) Williams, Jean grew up in the Jasper County area graduating from Monroe High (1951) where she met the love of her life R. Gene Scarbrough. They were married Aug. 12, 1951, at the Monroe Methodist Church. To this union three children were born: Richard Jr., (Freda), Koni J. Bunse (Marv) and W. Kent (Debbie). They made their home in Newton where she was active in church and community. Jean worked as the Senior High Guidance Counselor’s secretary (1966 to 1972) and a secretary in the Industrial Engineering Department of Maytag until her retirement in 1992.

Jean was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother who loved her family, traveling, music and played the piano intuitively as well as other instruments. In her later years she enjoyed playing “Name That Tune” at Heritage Manor and other nursing facilities. She enjoyed playing the accordion in the musical group Accordz. An avid square dancer involved with the Newton Squares and later Challenge Square Dancing. Her church home was the First United Methodist Church where she was involved in UMW and a mentor to youth. She enjoyed Face Time with her family, especially 2-year-old Colin’s activities.

Those left to honor Jean’s memory include her husband of 62 years, Gene; her children, Rick (Freda) Scarbrough of Tampa, Fla., Koni (Marv) Bunse of Newton, Iowa, Kent (Debbie) Scarbrough of West Des Moines, Iowa; her four grandchildren; her nine great-grandchildren; her sister, Betty Hartwell of Magalia, Calif.; her brothers, Sam J. Williams of Galva, Ill., and Gary (Marcia) Williams of Diamond Bar, Calif., and Aunt Shirley Smith of Durham, N.C.; and many nephews and nieces. She was proceeded in death by her parents Sam (1971) and Elsie (2006) Williams.

Celebration of Life is planned for 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 21, with visitation one hour before service at the First United Methodist in Newton. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the charity of your choice. ~ The Newton Daily News, Newton, Iowa.
