Sloan, Luella – 1929-2013

Luella Sloan, 83, of Newton died Tuesday, July 30, 2013, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at First Assembly of God Church in Newton. The family will greet friends from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Memorials in Luella’s name may be left at the church the morning of the service or the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory.
Luella, the daughter of Morris and Donna (Elliott) Fay, was born on Oct. 19, 1929, in Central City. Luella attended many schools as she was growing up, but completed most of her high school education at Newton High School before moving and graduating from Troy Mills High School as valedictorian of her graduating class.
On March 6, 1949, Luella was united in marriage with William “Bill” Sloan at the First Assembly of God Church in Newton. They made their home in Newton. Luella was the church custodian at the First Assembly of God Church for 20 years before beginning her 30-year career at the Newton Public Library. Luella also did ironing for many people out of her home. She was a member of the First Assembly of God Church and a Parkinson’s Support Group. Luella enjoyed many crafts including painting and sewing.
Those left to honor Luella’s memory are her three children, Dennis (Mary) Sloan of Newton, Jane (Earl) Canfield of Dunkerton and LaDon (Tom) Broich of Ankeny; 11 grandchildren, Jason Hashman, Justin (Angie) Hashman, Jenn (Kevin) Reed, Michelle (Nate) Davidson, Travis, Tyler and Josh Broich, and Matthew, Hannah, Andrew, and Elijah Canfield; her four great-grandchildren, Jarrett, Cooper, Emma and Gabe; sister, Clarissa Trammel of Missouri; and her sister-in-law, Genevieve Fay of Kansas.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Morris Fay and Donna Fay Heiserman; husband, William “Bill” Sloan on July 23, 2013; her daughter, Cheryl Hashman; and three brothers, Charles, John and Vernon Fay.
