Fred E. Shenton, 77, of Newton died of a heart ailment Monday at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines. The body was cremated, and graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Palo Alto Cemetery in rural Newton.

Mr. Shenton had lived in Newton all of his life. He was a retired Maytag employee and also had been a contractor. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of Newton Elks Club and First United Methodist Church in Newton. He enjoyed fishing and the outdoors.

He is survived by two sons, F. Lee of Portage, Mich., and F. Craig of Newton; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his wife, Grace.

The family will receive friends from 10:30 to 10:50 a.m. Wednesday at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home in Newton. Memorial contributions may be made to Newton Salvation Army. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, Tues 2 May 2000.
