Mary Helen Etter, 80, of Newton died on Monday, March 3, 2014, at Skiff Medical Center.

A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 7, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 6, at the funeral home. Memorials in Helen’s name may be left at the funeral home.

Helen, the daughter of Vernon and Iola Irene (Hinshaw) Hammer, was born on May 18, 1933, in rural Jasper County. She graduated from Newton High School in 1951 and belonged to the 4-H club. Helen was united in marriage with Carl Richard Etter on June 28, 1951, in Missouri. While in high school, and shortly after she was married, Helen worked at Woolworth’s. She later stayed at home to take care of her four children, Diana, Carl David, Danny and Darrel. After Darrel went to school, Helen worked for 15 years as an inserter for the Newton Daily News. Helen loved raising children, and her lifelong passion was caring for her own children and others. She also liked to sew, do embroidery and follow her husband’s bluegrass band. Helen also enjoyed cats.

Helen is survived by her children, Diana Laver of Newton, Carl David (Connie) Etter of Altoona, Danny (Michelle) Etter of Missouri and Darrel (Ralphine) Etter of Texas; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren with one on the way; one great-great-granddaughter; and her brothers, Carroll Hammer and Terry Hammer, both of Newton.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Carl Richard Etter; a son, Thomas Wayne Etter, at birth; and a brother, Dean Hammer. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News.
