Mother, Infant Son, Killed As Car Hits Bridge Siding
Child Riding On Mother’s Lap In Front Seat
Mrs. Homer Revell, 310 East Sixteenth Street North, and her 3-month-old son, David, were killed this morning when the car in which they were passengers crashed into the abutment of the Skunk River bridge about six miles west of Newton on Highway 6.
Others in the car who were treated at Skiff Memorial Hospital were:
Billy, Mrs. Homer Revell’s 6-year-old son, suffering from lacerations and possible internal injuries.
Mrs. Violet Revell, 21 of Reasnor and driver of the car, who suffered shock and lacerations.
Carol, 19-month-old daughter of Mrs. Violet Revell, who received possible internal injuries and shock.
Sherel (Cheryl), 8 months, daughter of Mrs. Violet Revell, was placed in an oxygen tent and treated for a concussion.
Also riding in the car but not injured were Jeannie, 4, and Carl, 2, children of Mrs. Homer Revell.
Struck Bridge
The accident occurred when Mrs. Violet Revell, who was driving the car, turned to quiet the older children playing in the back seat, according to Highway Patrolman Harold Trimble, who along with Max Schmeling and Sheriff Ed Scoville, investigated the accident.
The car went out of control momentarily, Trimble said, and collided with the bridge siding.
The driver’s 34-year old sister, Mrs. Homer Revell, was killed outright when her back was broken by the impact.
Her infant son David, was riding on her lap and was crushed in the collision.
The car hit the concrete bridge foundation then careened into a full swing and headed back in the direction just traveled.
A car following the Revell auto, driven by Thomas W. Mooney, II, met the run-away vehicle head on, but only slight damage was done to Mooney’s car. He was not injured.
