Gerrit Ver Steegt Dies on Saturday; Services Tuesday

LYNNVILLE – Gerrit Ver Steegt, 90, of rural Lynnville died Saturday at the Friendship Manor in Grinnell.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Friends Church in Lynnville.

The Rev. Ernest Thompson, pastor of the church, will conduct services. Burial will be in the Sully Cemetery.

Garden Chapel in Pella is handling the arrangements.

Memorial contributions to a fund set up in Mr. Ver Steegt’s name will be accepted. They may be left at the funeral home.

Survivors are his wife, Maggie; five sons, Clarence, Gerald and Melvin, all of Scarsboro; Floyd of Newton; and Harold of Montezuma; two daughters, Mrs. Henry G. (Clara) Van Wyk of sully and Mrs. Henry (Betty) Zuidema of Killduff; 22 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three daughters, a son, a grandchild, two great-grandchildren; and 14 brothers and sisters.

Mr. Ver Steeght was a oil station operator.

The son of Cornelis and Jennie De Hoop Ver Steegt, he was born May 8, 1887 at Uitricht, The Netherlands.

He was married to Maggie Van Genderen Jan. 17, 1911. ~ The Newton (Iowa) Daily News, Monday, January 30, 1978.
