Phyllis Long Dies Friday; Rites Tuesday
Mrs. Carl (Phyllis M.) Long, 59, of 724 W. 2nd St. S., a resident of Newton since 1954, died Friday afternoon at the Skiff Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m.
Tuesday, at the Toland-Wallace Funeral Home.The Rev. David Barnes, pastor of the Kellogg Christian Church, assisted by John Akers of Knoxville, will conduct services. Burial will be in the Newton Memorial Park Cemetery.
Survivors are her husband; two sons, Sherman Lee Hayes, of Grand Forks, N.D. and Carl E. Long, Jr. of Newton, a daughter, Mrs. James (Glenna Marie) Larsen of Tigard, Ore; four grandchildren; and her mother, Elizabeth J. Sherman of Linden Nursing Home in Eureka, Kan.
She was preceded in death by her father in May, 1960.
Mrs. Long was a member of the Kellogg Christian Church, Church Women United, BPW, American Library Association, and was active in women’s bowling and square dance clubs.
Mrs. Long, a longtime librarian, had been Jasper County librarian for many years.
The daughter of Charles E. and Elizabeth J. Honeycutt Sherman, she was born May 9, 1918 at Iola, Kan., was graduated from Emporia State Teachers College in Emporia, Kan., in 1941 with a bachelor of science degree and specialed for a year at Drake University in Des Moines.
She was married Dec. 23, 1955 in Des Moines. ~ The Newton (Iowa) Daily News, Monday, January 9, 1978.
