La Verne R. Edgeton

Grinnell - La Verne R. Edgeton, 67, of 611 Prairie, Grinnell, a former resident of Newton and graduate of Newton Community High School, died Monday, May 22, at the Montezuma Senior Home in Montezuma.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell.

The Rev. Arvid Dixen, pastor of St. John's Lutheran Church in Grinnell, will conduct services and burial will be in Prairie Vioew Cemetery at Gilman.

Memorials may be left at the funeral home.

Survivors are his wife, Irene; two sons, Dennis of New Providence and Glenn of Orlando, Fla.; four step-children, Madeline Matney of Gilman, John Albers of Osage, Ark., and Larry Albers of Laguna Hills, Calif.;; 13 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Also surviving is a brother James Edgeton of Fairfield.

Mr. Edgeton was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Edgeton, and a sister, Beatrice Stine.

Mr. Edgeton, a former scoutmaster of Grinnell Troop 347, was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, the Lutheran Brotherhood and the Grinnell American Legion.

The son of Charles and Lilly Bixby Edgeton, he was born Nov. 2, 1921 in Boone and moved to the Newton [sic-area] at the age of three.

After his graduation from Newton Community High School in 1939, he was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps for a year before entering the Army Air Force.

After his discharge from the Army, he was a member of the Iowa National Guard at Newton and Camp Dodge until 1961.

He was employed at Riverview Release Center south of Newton and at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, retiring in 1983. ~ The Newton Daily News, May 23 or 24, 1989.
