Don R. Carter, Former Newton Resident, Dies
Don Ray Carter, 25, of Newhall, a former resident of Newton, died at 10:15 p.m. Friday when his pickup truck collided with a semi-trailer truck, about 2 miles west of Cedar Rapids on U.S. 30.
The truck driver was not injured seriously.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Johnson-Reese Chapel in Newton.
The Rev. Ian R. Hoover, pastor of the Community Height Alliance church in Newton will conduct services.
Burial will be in the Newton Memorial Park Cemetery.
Memorial contributions to the Wild Life Federation of America will be accepted.
Survivors are his wife, Linda; a sister, Mrs. Charles Hearshman Jr. of Des Moines; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. Verlin Carter of rural Monroe, and his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Frances Helton of Ridgeway, Mo.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Blake, who was killed in an automobile accident Sept. 27, 1974.
Mr. Carter, a member of the Tools Chapel United Methodist Church, had been a diesel mechanic at Altorfer Machinery in Cedar Rapids, and the last month had been employed at Schmitz Excavating in Washburn.
The son of H. Verlin and Lois Long Carter, he was born Dec. 14, 1950 in Newton, and was graduated from Newton Community High School in 1969 and Area 11 Community College in Ankeny in 1971.
He was married to Linda Schwarz Oct. 11, 1975 in Newton.
