Struck by Semi, Laurel Boy Dies
A seven year-old Laurel boy died Friday afternoon when he was struck by a semi-trailer truck on Main St. in Laurel.
Authorities say Shawn M. Ruddick, son of Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Ruddick, died as a result of head and chest injuries sustained in the accident, which occurred shortly before 4 p.m.
The semi, driven by Roy Briggs of Maxwell, was southbound on Main St. when the Ruddick child ran out from behind a parked semi into the path of the oncoming truck.
Funeral services were held today at the Laurel United Methodist Church.
The Rev. William Mc Alpine, pastor of the church, conducted services. Burial was in the Graceland Cemetery in Laurel.
Estel-Perrin Funeral Home in Marshalltown handled arrangements.
Survivors are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Ruddick; of Laurel; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Don Rolston of Conrad and Mrs. Walter Goodman of Reinbeck; four step-brothers, including M. E. Ruddick of Marshalltown, Terrance L. Ruddick of Washington, D.C., and Douglas Ruddick of Mc Kinney, Va.; and two step-sisters, Mrs. Frank (Jane) Hawkins of Colonial Heights, Va., and Mrs. Thomas (Sue Dele) Donner of Newark, Del.
He was preceded in death by two grandmothers and a grandfather.
The son of Maurice and Betty Graves Ruddick, he was born May 21, 1971 in Grinnell.
