Arraigned in Death of Former Newton Resident
A 19-year old Des Moines man, Leroy Walter Maples, was arraigned Wednesday in the death of a former Newton and Grinnell resident.
Maples pleaded innocent to a charge of voluntary manslaughter in the death of David “Joe” Martinson, 34, whose body was found Tuesday in a vacant house on Des Moines’ north side.
Maples was ordered held in the Des Moines City jail on $25,000 bond.
Graveside rites for Mr. Martinson will be held at 1 p.m. Friday in the Veterans section of Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell.
The Rev. James P. Russell, pastor of the Grinnell United Methodist Church, will conduct services.
Military graveside rites will be conducted by the veterans ceremonial unit of Grinnell.
Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell is handling arrangements.
Survivors are two sons, Fred A. of Newton and Steve of Long Beach, Calif., a granddaughter, Ellen Martinson of Newton, and three brothers, Robert C. and Louis P. both of Newton and Gene of Grinnell.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Mr. Martinson, who served in the Navy for 12 years, was a carpenter and had been employed at one time in bridge work for Schroyer Construction Co. in Newton.
The son of Albert and Letha Barrett Martinson, he was born June 7, 1924 in Grinnell.
