Former Monroe Resident Dies In Auto Crash
MONROE – Charles Edward Blankenship, 25 of Des Moines, a resident of Monroe most of his life, was killed in a one-car accident near Des Moines Monday evening.
Mr. Blankenship, who resided in Monroe until a year ago, was pronounced dead on arrival at Broadlawns Hospital in Des Moines after his car struck an underpass.
According to Iowa Highway Troopers, who investigated the accident, Blankenship as alone in his automobile traveling east on Interstate-80.
His vehicle struck the underpass at the junction of Interstate-80 and Iowa 141 northwest of Des Moines.
The former Jasper County man was thrown from his car. He suffered multiple injuries.
The accident occurred at approximately 11:25 p.m. Monday.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Monroe United Methodist Church.
The Rev. Jerry Wolcott, pastor of the church, will conduct services. Burial will be in the Silent City Cemetery in Monroe.
Memorial contributions to the Heart Fund or the United Methodist Church will be accepted.
Walters-Coburn Funeral Home in Monroe is handling arrangements.
Survivors are his mother, Mrs. Walter Blankenship of Des Moines, a brother, R. David Blankenship of Des Moines; an aunt, Mrs. George Hensler of Monroe; and a niece, Tiffany Blankenship of Des Moines.
He was preceded in death by his father and his grandparents.
Mr. Blankenship, vice president of Blankenship Bros. of Des Moines, was a member of the Monroe United Methodist church, Associated Builders and Contractors, Iowa Land Improvement Association, Iowa Ski Club, Iowa State Century Club, and YMCA.
The son of Walter and Phyllis Gloyd Blankenship, he was born Oct. 19, 1952 in Des Moines, was a 1971 graduate of Monroe Community High School and attended Iowa State University in Ames.
