Robert Fredrick Osborn, 84, of Newton died Tuesday, August 13, 2013, at Skiff Medical Center. A memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. The family will greet friends following the service with a lunch at the funeral home. Memorials in Robert’s name may be left at the funeral home.
Robert, the son of William Fredrick and Violett Louise (Brown) Osborn, was born on Feb. 13, 1929, in Eden Township in Marshall County. He served his county in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Robert was united in marriage with Catherine Mary Warner on June 10, 1953, in Newton. He worked at the Maytag Company for 34 years, retiring in 1984. In 1990, Robert and Catherine moved to Arizona for nine years, where they managed a mobile home and RV park in Globe. When they returned from Arizona in 1999, they made their home in Knoxville, before moving back to Newton in 2012. Robert and Catherine were also custodians at the Red Rock Campground. He was a member of the American Legion Post 111, UAW Local 997, 21st Engineer Retirees. Robert was active in the Metz Church and was honored to go on the October 2011 Freedom Flight. Robert had worked with Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts and enjoyed wood working, camping, traveling and talking with people.
Those left to honor Robert’s memory are his wife, Catherine Osborn of Newton; children, Garry (Kathy) Osborn of Phoenix, Ariz., Michael (Beverly) Osborn of Littleton, Colo., Gregory (Roberta) Osborn of Highlands Ranch, Colo., and Darla (Dennis) Cooper of Newton; his seven grandchildren, Christopher (Marija) Osborn, Nicole (Troy) Harter, Anne Osborn, Nicholas Osborn (Cierra Smith), Joshua Byrd (Becky Bradley), Samantha (Trevor) Nelson and Caitlin Osborn; his great-grandchild Ethan Klosterman; siblings Helen Hills, Charles Osborn, Steve Osborn, Ramona Russell, Ada Strick, Stanley Osborn, Shirley Hoyla, Patricia Anthony and Joseph Osborn; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers John and James Osborn; sisters Leona and Maxine Osborn; and several nieces and nephews. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News.
