Obituary for Orville D. Zylstra

Orville Dale Zylstra was born on April 16, 1929, near Grinnell, Iowa. He was the third of nine children that were born to Paul and Gertie Vanden Hoek Zylstra. Orville attended a country grade school near Grinnell through the 8th grade and graduated from Sully High School in Sully, Iowa.

Orville was drafted into the United States Army in February, 1951, and on August 22, 1951, he and Nellie Mildred Van Der Pol were united in marriage at her parents’ home. Orville was stationed in Alaska with the 21st Engineers during his active duty and following his discharge in February, 1953, was welcomed home by his wife, Nellie, and their first daughter, Ruth Lynn. Their family eventually grew to include four more daughters: Sharla Joyce, Judith Carol, Donetta Jean, Sharon Rene and John Ruge. Orville and Nellie farmed south of Sully, on the Andrew Huyser farm, for thirty-five years. Orville became a rural mail carrier in Kellogg, Iowa in 1984 and was employed by The National Rural Letter Carriers until his retirement in 2000. During this time they had moved into Sully and resided there for 25 years. Orville, with the loving support and care of Nellie, waged a valiant battle against Lewy Body Dementia for the past ten years. He was unwavering in his confidence that God ultimately controlled every aspect of his life and walked with him as he journeyed through the years in the valley until God would say to him, “You who are weary, come home!”

He became a resident at Jefferson Place in Pella, Iowa in November, 2012, and was visited faithfully everyday by his wife, Nellie. Orville passed over into the presence of his Lord and Savior on Tuesday afternoon, August 13, 2013, at the age of 84 years. He will be deeply missed by his loving wife of 61 years, Nellie; their children, twelve grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren: Sharla and Jacob H. Voss of Homer Glen, IL; Judy and Denny Rooy of Grand Rapids, MI; Jean and Loren Van Wyk of Pella, IA; Sharon Zylstra of Boca Raton, FL and John Ruge of Pella, IA.

Of his original family Orville leaves the following siblings: William and Bertha Zylstra of Sully, Marvin and Celia Zylstra of Pella, Wendall and Dorothy Zylstra of Sully, Delores and Gary Van Rees, Claude and Joan Zylstra and Gareth P. Vande Kieft all of Pella; and the following sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Annie and Melvin Rouwenhorst of Pella, Bernie and Carlene Van Der Pol of Sully. Orville was preceded in death by his daughter, Ruth Lynn, in 1976 at the age of 24 years; a great-granddaughter, Morgan Grace Voss; his parents, Paul and Gertie Zylstra; his parents-in-law, Gerrit B. and Marie Duinink Van Der Pol; his sister, Bertha Eunice, who died at a young age and a brother, Carol, his sister, Mary Lou, and her husband, Merle Van Steenis, and his sister-in-law, Judy (Claude) Zylstra.

Orville was a lifelong, faithful, dedicated member of the Sully Christian Reformed Church in Sully. Throughout his lifetime he used the gifts God had given him by serving in various leadership roles.
