Lorne Maynard Nestrud was born at Lakefield, Minn. on Sept. 16, 1916. His parents were Adolph J. and Carrie Matilda (Mahre) Nestrud. He had two brothers, Arden and Maurice, and one sister, Inez Erickson. Lorne died July 21, 2013.

Lorne started college at the University of Nebraska and then went to SDSC at Brookings, S.D. where he graduated with a BS in agronomy and economics. Lorne was also active in ROTC on campus.

While at SDSU, Lorne met Marjorie Walder. They were married on Dec. 22, 1941, in a small Lutheran church at Northwood.

Lorne became an US Army Captain in WWII from 1942-1945. He was in the Army European Theater of Operations with the 94th Division, 1st Battalion, 376th Infantry Regiment. He received a Purple Heart and a Bronz Star in 1945.

Lorne worked for the Soil Conservation Service as a soil scientist. He worked in Sioux Falls from 1946-1961; Mobridge, S.D. from 1961-1967; and in Newton from 1967-68. He retired after 36 years of service.

Lorne loved fishing and spent many vacations in Minnesota and also had a retirement home at Village of Holiday Lakes, Port Charlotte, Fla. where he enjoyed fishing and shrimping. Lorne also liked hunting, golfing and gardening.

In 2005, Lorne and Marj moved to Immanuel Trinity Village in Papillion, Neb. They were active members of the Lutheran church in all of the communities that they lived in throughout their life. Lorne taught Sunday school and adult bible classes (Bethel Series). They were cornerstone members of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Lorne was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie. Surviving family include daughters Penny (Norman) Bower and Barbara (Lynn) Lueder; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News.
