Charles E. Scarlett, 72, passed away July 25, 2013 at his home in Runnells, Iowa. He was born November 9, 1940 in Des Moines, son of Josephine Yamen and Eugene Scarlett. He graduated from East High School and was employed with Maytag for 28 years.

Charles had extensive knowledge and a great passion for horses and mules. He enjoyed riding in the mountains, selling & trading horses and mules, and operating the entry gate during barrel races at the Dittmer Stables. Charles was a horse and mule trader for more than 50 years, which he continued to do from his bed when he was sick.

He was a member of the UAW 997, Iowa State Trail Riders Association, Ox Bow Team Driving Club, and American Quarter Horse Association. Charles was also an inspector for the National Palomino Horse Breeders Association for many years.

Charles is survived by his children, Charley (Lisa) Scarlett and Tanya (James) Woolery; grandchildren, Justine and Dustin Scarlett, Trace, Tylynn, Shawna and Jeremy Woolery; great-grandson, Landen Woolery; first wife, Marlene DuVall; as well as two brothers and five sisters. He was preceded in death by his brother and sister.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Sunday, July 28, 2013 at Hamilton’s Mitchellville Funeral Home, 303 Center Avenue South in Mitchellville. A Celebration of Life will be held from 1 to 5 p.m., Saturday, August 3, 2013 with burial following. Please contact Tanya or Charley for more details.
