James Michael “Bear” McAnly, 60, passed away on Nov. 7, 2012, at Providence Hospice and Care Center East in Portland, Ore.

Born in Newton on Dec. 26, 1951, he was the son of L.C. Jr. and Catherine McAnly — a very joyful occasion for his parents during the holiday season. He graduated from Newton Senior High School in 1970 and attended the University of Iowa.

Jim moved to Oregon in 1972 and had resided there since. He was very witty, generous and had a great sense of humor. He is survived by his sisters, Mary and Ann, and a brother, Tom. He had many life-long friends, including Dave “Albert” Vermillion of Portland, as well as many friends he made along the way. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News Website.
===============================================
McAnly, James Michael 'Bear' 60 Dec. 26, 1951 Nov. 07, 2012 Bear was born on Dec. 26, 1951, between the scenic North and South Skunk Rivers in Newton, Iowa, to his loving parents, L.C. Jr. and Catherine McAnly. In 1972, he moved to Oregon with a bunch of his fun-loving redneck hippies, making many new friends in his 40 years in his adopted state. Bear had a rare command of the English language, a great sense of humor and a special gift as a practical joker. He also had a generous, kind-hearted spirit, sharing what he had with others even if it meant sacrificing for himself. A celebration of his life will be held at his favorite spot, the top of Larch Mt., at Noon, Saturday, June 22, in the picnic ground of the observatory. Special thanks and remembrances to Providence and Care Center East for their kindness and care.
