Patricia Verwers Lang

Born in Newton on Oct. 19, 1937, she was the daughter of Andrew and Lucille Verwers. Pat was salutatorian for the last graduating class of Lynnville High School in 1955 where she also played basketball. She went on to Thompson’s Beauty School in Des Moines where she received her cosmetology license. It was at the Bishop’s Cafeteria below the school where Pat met her husband Jim. They settled down in Des Moines and had three children. In 1986, they headed west to the Denver area for 11 years before retiring down in Corpus Christi, Texas. In October of 2012, they returned to Des Moines. Pat passed away on May 24, 2013.

Pat enjoyed adventure. She and Jim traveled to Europe twice visiting over 14 countries. Pat was an avid reader, Scrabble and puzzle fanatic. She was a huge NFL football fan. She liked to snow ski, bike, prospect, fish and camp. Animals were her weakness as many a stray ended up in her home. She loved being with family and friends.

Pat and Jim recently celebrated 56 years of marriage with their daughter Suzan; son Bart, daughter-in-law Dana; grandson Tom; granddaughter-in-law Jenni; and great-grandson Cosmo and Andrew.

Other survivors include her son Jeff, his wife Julie, their children, Robert and Erika.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to The Animal Rescue League of Iowa.

A memorial service will be held at 12 p.m. Saturday, at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW Ninth St. in Des Moines. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News Website.
