3:00pmPaul Casper, 78, of rural Newton died on Friday, May 31, 2013, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton. A graveside service will be held at 3:00 P.M., Wednesday, June 5, 2013, at Newton Union Cemetery. The family will celebrate Paul’s life beginning at 5:00 P.M., Wednesday, at the American Legion in Newton. Memorials in Paul’s name may be left at the graveside service, American Legion, or the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. Paul, the son of Robert Cecil and Wilma Mabel (Hendricks) Casper, was born on March 10, 1935 in Newton. He graduated from Newton High School in 1954. Paul served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Paul was united in marriage with Carolyn Harms on December 7, 1957. He worked for 39 years as a cutter for the Vernon Company, retiring in 1996. Paul was a member of the American Legion Post 111, Izaak Walton League, American Pigeon Club, American Bow Hunters Association, and the NRA. He was also a member of the 2011 Freedom Flight. Paul was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed bow hunting and fishing. From the age of 15, he also trained and raced homing pigeons, winning many trophies and awards. Those left to celebrate Paul’s life are his children, John (Brenda) Casper of Pella, Iowa and Debbie (Kenny) Schwarz of Newton; his grandchildren, Jennifer (Tad) Newel, Rowdy (Kelley) Meyer, and Katie Mathes; great-grandchildren, Madison, Josh, Abby, and Oliva; and his Legion family. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Carolyn in 2002; sister, Karol Kay Casper; a brother, Darrell Lee Casper, in infancy; and his dog, Crickett.
