Helen B. (Otte) Wallace, 94, of Newton died on Wednesday, May 29, 2013, at the Skiff Medical Center in Newton. A service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 15, at the First Presbyterian Church, 220 N. Second Ave. E. in Newton. Friends may call after 3 p.m. Friday, June 14, and the family will greet friends from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News Website.

(Janeen) Wallace of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Jane Reilly of Catonsville, Maryland; four grandchildren: Jeff (Nicole) Wallace of Torrance, California, Chad (Heather) Wallace of Las Vegas, Nevada, Jake (Pearl) Laaveg of Catonsville, Maryland, and Sami Wallace of Las Vegas, Nevada; five great-grandchildren: Kaitlyn, Garrett, Jackson, Emily, and Audrey; her identical twin sister, Hazel Cramer of Topeka, Kansas; and many nieces and nephews, including Gary (Pat) Wallace of Newton.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Albert in 2007; brother, Alvin Otte; and infant sister, Florence Otte.
Helen B. (Otte) Wallace, the daughter of John and Ella (Runft) Otte, and her identical twin sister, Hazel, were born on June 12, 1918 in rural Cawker City, Kansas. She was a graduate of Downs High School in Downs, Kansas with the Class of 1936. Helen was very active in 4-H growing up, winning many awards & trips. Helen and Hazel won the Kansas State Girls’ Dairy Demonstration and a trip to the National Dairy Cattle Congress in Dallas, Texas in 1936. While there they met the “Iowa twins,” Albert and Arthur Wallace, who had won the Iowa State Boys’ Dairy Demonstration.
Helen taught country school in Kansas from 1936-1938. She graduated from the University Of Kansas School Of Nursing as a Registered Nurse in 1941, where she was also a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing.
On November 23, 1942, Helen was united in marriage with Albert J. Wallace in Reno, Nevada. She was employed as an RN in Kansas City, Kansas, in San Francisco, California during World War II, and then in Wyoming, Iowa. Helen and Albert along with Arthur and Fritzie Wallace, owned the Wallace Funeral Home in Wyoming, Iowa from 1952-1963 and the Wallace Funeral Home in Newton from 1963-1984. She was then associated with the Wallace-Pence Funeral Home from 1984-1998, and had worked at the Wallace Family Funeral Home since 1999. Helen was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Newton, where she had served as an elder and deacon and was active in the Women’s Association and Gates Circle. She was also a member of the Amboy Grange; Jasper County Cancer Society; Newton Chapter No. 100 Order of the Eastern Star for 62 years, and was a Past Matron; Jasper County American Business Women’s Association; National Ostomy Association; the Des Moines Chapter United Ostomy Association; life member of the Jasper County Historical Society; and Skiff Medical Center Women’s Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing Bridge and belonged to several Bridge clubs.
Memorials to the First Presbyterian Church or to the Centre for Arts and Artists may be left at the funeral home or at the church at the time of the service. Memorials may also be mailed to the funeral home, please add, Attn: Wallace Family on the envelope.
