The death of Mrs. Hugh Newell occurred yesterday morning at five o’clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Lelia Vert, on West Washington Street.

Mrs. Newell’s maiden name was Lucinda Lee. She was born in Butler County, Pennsylvania, March 13, 1821. She was married to Hugh Newell at Belleville, Ohio, Dec. 25, 1851, and they came to this county in May 1855. They lived at first in a log house in Adamson’s Grove, while a house was being built for them in Newton. The same fall they moved to town and occupied their own home which stood on the corner where Dr. E. H. Robb now lives, and which was for many years the family home.

Four children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Newell but two daughters died in infancy. Duane Newell and Mrs. Lelia Vert survive, both being residents of this city. Some two weeks ago Mrs. Newell had a second stroke of paralysis and from that time she was perfectly helpless. She was tenderly cared for to the end by her daughter, with whom she had made her home for the past three years. Mr. Newell died in 1895.

Deceased became inured to hardships during her early residence in this county. Mr. Newell was the first mayor of Newton and took the first census, the population, numbering just one hundred souls.

The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at three o’clock in the Congregational Church, of which deceased was a member.
