People were greatly surprised Sunday morning to learn that during the night William Amos had died. He had been in usual health until Friday night when he had an attack of heart trouble, but it was thought not serious. He was around as usual Saturday but during Saturday night he called for members of the family that on account of difficulty in breathing he would like to have the doctor. In less than a half an hour he had passed away.

Mr. Amos was born in England, Feb. 9, 1836. He sailed for America July 4, 1854 and remained in New York a short time after landing, coming west to Illinois in October of that year. Three he was married to Lydia Hammond, who did not long survive. He afterward came to the southern part of this state and was married October 23, 1872, to Hannah E. Evans, soon after moving to Newton.

There were nine children born to Mr. and Mrs. Amos, seven of whom are living, as follows: Mrs. Lizzie Largent, Josie, Perry, Harry, Ida, Osabel and Emma. Deceased also leaves a sister Mrs. Scott of Arrowsmith, Ill. Mr. Amos was for many years a member of the Baptist Church. He was a very kind hearted and accommodating man, always in a good humor, ready to help anyone who might need help. He will be missed as a familiar figure in the town.

The funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon at 3 o’clock in the Baptist Church. ~ The Newton News, Monday, July 27, 1903, Page 1, Column 4
