Herwehe, Adam 1856-1944

ADAM HERWEHE--Funeral services were held Monday from the Methodist Church for Adam Herwehe, Jasper County pioneer. Rev. Geo. Pennington and Rev. J. Lynn Pace had charge of the services.

Interment was in the Monroe cemetery. Adam Herwehe was born April 8, 1856, near the pioneer village of Vandalia, Jasper County. His parents were Phillip and Mary Werntz Herwehe, who came to Iowa from Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1854 via Ohio and Mississippi Rivers, then by covered wagon. Adam was the fourth of six children, all of whom have passed on before him. He was married to Anna Sarah Monica Ammer, on Nov. 7, 1878, and they settled on a farm four miles east of Monroe, where they resided until retirement in 1925 to Monroe. His wife Sarah, died during the same year. They reared a family of eleven, six boys and five girls, Jacob, Stephen, Emma McCauley, Rose Oldham, Sarah Tool, Fredrick, Earl, Elminia Tice, Ernest, Howard and Verny. Four of these have passed on, Stephen, Elminia, Ernest and Verny. Thirty grandchildren and thirty great grandchildren survive.

Adam resided within the same county throughout his 88 years of life. He died July 1, 1944 at Monroe. He has seen his native county grow from virgin prairie and woods to a modern progressvie community. He joined the Lutheran Church in his early youth; His faith in Our Saviorur and Creator was firm throughout his life and was exemplary in the upbringing of the larg family.

Each member of this family will affirm the value of many emphatic instructions on honesty, respect for others and upright living. He became a member of the Newton Daily News "Three Quarter Century Club" as soon as eligible and enjoued that association for many years. Many old neighbors, friends and relatives will grieve his departure.
