Henry Herwehe, son of Phillip and Anna Mary Herwehe, was born at Vandalia, Iowa, March 10, 1858 and departed this life Oct 4, 1939, after a three year illness, beginning with a stroke and ending with the third stroke September 22 which brought death Wednesday. The deceased had reached the age of 81 years. His parents were both born in Mannheim, Germany, where they grew up, married and began life on the farm.

In 1855 they emigrated to America and settled for a short time at Cincinnati, Ohio, coming in the fall of that year to Jasper County. Here they again took up farming near Vandalia. Here it was that Henry was born. Those were pioneer days of log houses and open prairie. Mr. Herwehe was born in a log house. When two years of age he moved with his parents to the home-place north of Monroe where he received his education in the district school. Early in life he took his place among the county pioneers. He was most successful as a general farmer and stock raiser.

On April 24, 1884, he was united in marriage with Anna K. Wittmer, whose parents were also pioneers of this county. To this union 11 children were born, two of whom preceded their father in death; Cora Belle and Richard, both of whom died in infancy. Brother Herwehe was converted and joined the Methodist Church in 1884 at Bellevue, later transferring to the Monroe Methodist Church. He has been a loyal and faithful Christian and church member since. As long as his health would permit he was regular in his attendance at the church services. Many of the accomplishments of the local church are due to his love, energy and service. Readers of church records will often be reminded of his noble acts, his love of God and truth and his love for his fellowmen.

He was also a member of the Three Quarter Century Club of Newton. Mr. and Mrs. Herwehe celebrated their golden wedding anniversary five years ago in 1934. With his famly he moved to Monroe 20 years ago, though never really retiring but always remaining active and continuing to go out to his farms to work. Throughout his illness he was uncomplaining and patient, always manifesting the Christian spirit and faith in God. He was a good neighbor and a friend to all especially those in need. Always kind and helpful and speaking the encouraging word. His was a long an useful life in church and community.
