J. B. ROSS, FORMERLY OF JASPER COUNTY DIES IN DES MOINES

Last Saturday afternoon at 3 o’clock occurred the death of J. B. Ross, who for many years was one of the largest feeders of cattle and the most widely known owner of fast horses in Jasper county. His demise took place at his home in Des Moines where he has been joint owner with his son, Roy Ross, of the Ross & Ross livery – one of the best equipped liveries in the city of Des Moines.

For the past two years the deceased has been failing rapidly in health, and for the last three months he has spent much time in the hospital in Des Moines in an effort to gain relief from dropsy and heart trouble, which finally accomplished his death. Mr. Ross leaves a son, Roy, who was with him in business, a daughter-in-law who was formerly Miss Ethelyn McCord, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. E. McCord of this city, a grandson, Jack, who was named for his grandfather and a wife, who will be grief stricken by his unexpected departure. The funeral will be held at 10 o’clock tomorrow morning at Des Moines and the body will be brought to Newton tomorrow at 1 o’clock for burial in the Newton cemetery.

Mr. Ross and family moved to Des Moines about five years ago. Previous to that time they lived on the old Ross farm about three miles east of Colfax. There was in the Ross farm about 540 acres and at one time, about ten years ago, Mr. Ross had as many as 800 cattle on his farm feeding them for the Chicago market. In addition to this extensive cattle raising Mr. Ross was a great lover of horse flesh and his fast horse – Charlie Ross – was a winner of many trophies and many handsome purses in this section of Iowa a few years ago.

Mr. Ross was about sixty years of age. His untimely death will bring sorrow to many of his friends in Newton and Jasper county where he has been so well known all these years. He enjoyed the distinction while in Jasper county of being one of the biggest stock men in the state. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, April 8, 1912, page 8.
