Fielder W. Swearingen was born in Tennessee, May 14, 1819. Departed this life January 9, 1903, aged 83 years, 7 months and 25 days.
When quite young his parents moved to Virginia. In 1845 was married to Miss Nancy Stout. Of this union there were eight children, four sons and four daughters, all of whom survive the parents. The mother died some eight years ago.
Both of the parents united with the Baptist Church when quite young. In 1859 they came to Iowa. His last years were spent in hopes of a blessed reunion with his companion with whom he lived just fifty years and three days.
Grandpa Swearingen died at the home of his son-in-law, Henry Landmesser, where he has stayed most of the time since the death of his wife. In this home he was always made welcome and received the tenderest care. There was nothing that was too good for grandpa.
The funeral service was held at the home conducted by Rev. Martin of Killduff after which the remains were laid to rest in the Hewitt Cemetery near Galesburg.
