J. M. Rippetoe and wife left last night for Burlington, where their brother-in-law, John E. Kelly, had just been killed. He was an engineer on the Burlington and while pulling the fast mail train the driver on his side of the engine broke and in flying around tore off the side of the cab, pulled him out and literally pounded him to death. He was one of the Burlington’s most trusted engineers. Mrs. Kelly and Mrs. Rippetoe are sisters.

The Newton Daily Herald, Saturday, January 17, 1903Page 1, Column 3
Mrs. Kelly had a premonition of his death the night he was killed. On two former occasions when Mr. Kelly had been in wrecks Mrs. Kelly had some warning or vision of the matter, and on the night Mr. Kelly was killed she dreamed of his train being in danger and turned her head away to keep from seeing the crash. It seemed to her she was awakened by a terrible crash and she worried from that time until the sad news was flashed to her that Mr. Kelly was dead. These things are very strange.
