Francis Harlan Smith, 70, of Newton died Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2012, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

A graveside funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 19, at the Colfax Cemetery. There will be an open visitation beginning at 10 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Colfax. Francis Harlan Smith, age 70 of Newton, passed away Tuesday, October 16, 2012, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton. Graveside funeral services will be held on Friday, October 19, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. at the Colfax Cemetery. There will be an open visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Colfax. Following the graveside service there will be luncheon held at the church. The son of Francis P. and Gertrude (Jaarsma) Smith, Francis was born on June 15, 1942 in Pella, Iowa. Francis attended school in Colfax and worked at Progress Industries in Newton since 2001. He was a proud 54 year member of the First Baptist Church in Colfax, where he was involved in the AWANA program and was the church photographer. Francis enjoyed going to the park, sitting in the swing in the summertime, going to picnics and eating at Poppy's in Colfax. Francis also enjoyed watching game shows on the "devil box."
