Sammie Lee Schmidt, 75, of New Sharon died Tuesday evening, Oct. 16, 2012, on arrival at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, at the First Baptist Church in Pella. Interment will be at the Peoria Cemetery. Visitation will begin after noon Friday, Oct. 19, at the First Baptist Church, where the family will be present from 4 to 7 p.m. Van Dyk-Duven is handling arrangements. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News.

Obituary for Sammie Lee Schmidt
Sammie Lee Schmidt was born north of Taintor, Iowa on April 15, 1937, the youngest of five children born to Francis and Lenora (Kooistra) Schmidt. He attended and graduated Sully High School in Sully, Iowa with the Class of 1955. During his high school career he was a center on the basketball team and a member of the 6-man state championship football team. Following graduation Sammie Lee and Rose Mary Boyd were united in marriage on October 20, 1955. To this union two sons were born: Karl Vincent and Kalvin Kent. Sammie was employed in construction and later started his own company, Sam Schmidt Construction. He was well known in the area for his exceptional masonry work. The Red Rock Fish Hatchery was another endeavor that he began on the South Skunk River Bottom. Sam was a man of many talents, especially musical abilities. He filled the George Daly auditorium in Oskaloosa, Iowa and the Pella and What Cheer, Iowa, Opera Houses with country and gospel music. He also sung at church and local retirement homes. In the 1980s he and Rose Mary travelled to Nashville, Tennessee and recorded five albums. Sam was an avid hunter. He loved spending time with his coon dogs and the Lower Grove Fox Hunters. Morel mushrooms, gardening and juicing were his favorite past-times. But most of all he was a man of God. A great husband, father and grandpa that will be sorely missed by by his wife of 56 years, Rose Mary; his two sons and their families: Karl and Jennifer (Roozeboom) Schmidt of Knoxville, Iowa and their three children: Renee Kindley and her daughter, Layne Kindley, Randi and Brad Sincox and their two children: Travis Lewis and Taya Sincox, and Isaac Schmidt; Kalvin and Carrie (Silvers) Schmidt of New Sharon, Iowa and their two children: Heather and Bob Donaldson and their four children: Karisa, Alex, Jayden and Lillian Donaldson, and Scott Clark. He was a great brother to his siblings and their spouses: Mary Lois and Earl Vande Krol, Norma Conover, Fred and Helen Schmidt all of Sully, Iowa; and son–in-law to step mother-in-law, Mildred (Klein) Boyd, and brother-in-law and sister-in-law to Patty (Boyd) and Delmar Martin of Schell, Missouri; and uncle to his many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Lenora Schmidt; his sister, Barb Sexton and her husband, Bob Sexton, his brother-in-law, Bruce Conover; and his parents-in-law, Earl and Fern Louise (Carter) Boyd. Sammie passed away on Tuesday evening, October 16, 2012 on arrival at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa at the age of 75 years. He was a witness to his faith and was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church in Pella, Iowa.

Interment will be made in the Peoria Cemetery at Peoria, Iowa

Visitation will begin after noon on Friday at the First Baptist Church where the family will be present Friday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.
