JERVIS JOHNSON

Another of the old settlers of Jasper county has passed away. Like as a shock of corn fully ripe, so was he gathered into the heavenly garner. Some thirty years since, Jervis Johnson settled on the farm near Lynnville on which he continued to reside. Here he exercised a true christian hospitality, his house being a resting place for many a traveler; and his knowledge of the country, and good judgment enabling him to give practical advice to those seeking home in this part of Iowa. He was widely known, and as widely respected for his incorruptible integrity, and his upright walk among men. A member of the Society of Friends, he was attached to their doctrine and modes of worship; yet with no spirit of bigotry, and with no narrow sectarian views, he recongnized the image of his Master wheresoever he found it. As he had lived a life of faith and of love, so his death was full of trust and of hope. He entered into his eternal rest
"Like one who wraps the drapery of his couch
about him,
And lies down to pleasant dreams."

His funeral was largely attended by friends and neighbors, some coming from quite a distance for that purpose. He was about 77 years of age.
