Dies At Home of Her Sister
Mrs. Mary Houck Dies Last Evening – Funeral will be Held Sunday Afternoon

Mrs. John Houck died last night at the home of her sister, Mrs. Tacey Montgomery after a long illness following an accident sustained to her hip in June. On June 12 Mrs. Houck fell from the porch of her residence and broke her hip bone. She was taken directly to the city hospital where expert care was given her. Finally she requested that she be taken to the home of her sister, Mrs. Montgomery, where for nine weeks loving hands ministered to her every need, and her many friends assisted in cheering the long days. She was confined to her bed during these weeks, but was ever patient and cheerful even through hours of suffering.

Mary Jennings was born November 5, 1839 in Knox county, Ohio. She came to Iowa in 1854 and was married at the age of sixteen in Marengo, Iowa, to John W. Houck, coming to Newton in 1866 where she has resided since. For fifty-three years Mrs. Houck has watched the small prairie town grow to the present bustling city and has added her share to its progress, especially in the realm of spiritual advancement. She has been an active member of the Christian church – beloved by fellow workers in the various religious circles. She leaves three devoted sisters, Mrs. Tacey Montgomery, Mrs. William Baker of Newton, and Mrs. Sarah Betts of Long Beach, Cal.

Funeral obsequies will be held Sunday at 2:30 in the chapel of Morgan and Son, Rev. R. B. Helser officiating. Interment will be in the Newton cemetery beside her husband who died sixteen years ago. ~ Newton Daily News, September 27, 1919, page 1.
